Dan:

You can help with a major education software/Mac matter...

Our NC school system uses the relatively well known Success Maker (CCC), a
reading and math assistance series of programs
(<<http://www.ccclearn.com/>>).

This software is extraordinarily expensive - often costing more than the
computer itself! And despite this premium cost, the software has many
restrictions - like network servers cannot have both Mac and Windows
clients, and it does not support Netboot, and it conflicts with
MacManager, etc...!!

So, after investing BIG bucks a few years ago, our district has had a
variety of computer compatibility problems with it (on both Macs and PCs).
Unfortunately, they have chosen to blame Apple for most of these issues,
and this has become one of their main reason's for planning to replace
Macs with PCs...

I am evaluating the situation, but I am a computer consultant, not an
expert in K-12 software. Furthermore, from doing some preliminary
research, it is apparent that there are many other schools that are also
interested in this subject.

My questions to your readers are:
1) Does your school district have any experience with Success Maker?

2) Have they used Success Maker on Macs or PCs?

3) What type of network does your school have?

4) Have you had any issues with Success Maker and Novell networks?

5) What other alternatives for Success Maker on Macs are there?

6) What are the pros and cons of these alternatives?

7) What are teacher's views about the overall merits of using Success
Maker as a learning aide?

Any other info or site references they have would be greatly appreciated.

Please have them email me directly. If you'd like, I will post a summary.

Regards,

John Droz, jr.
