Very lucky...but an idiot!! He did some things that were grave mistakes 
(that you learn in flight school NOT to do) and somehow managed to stay 
alive.
1. After he decided  his landing site he changed it 3 more times!
2. "By now my altitude was down to 400 to 500 above ground level... I made a 
tight left turn and cross controlled the rudder and ailerons to drop into 
the center of the field"     Absolutely perfect conditions to spin the 
aircraft the remaining 400 feet into the ground!
3.  He did not mention anything about securing the engine or any other 
aircraft systems ie. shutting off the fuel.  He said he had the landing 
light on so that would mean he had the master on..."It took about 30 to 45 
seconds to get out of the aircraft.  The smell of fuel was very strong."
