Tolerance and acceptance of those whose appearance, beliefs or lifestyles are different from our own is wonderful quality to which we should all aspire.

Thank you Janine for your eloquence.

Ask yourselves why Valerie chooses not to participate in family functions anymore.

I think it expresses the views of the majority of Canadians about this very personal and controversial subject.
By the way, a subject that was very well expressed by Dave and Cliff.  Way to go Guys.

I have been saddened, hurt and disappointed by few things on the MacLean list, in fact the vast majority of postings to this board have made me very proud to be part of such a loving family.  However the recent spate of homophobic postings have upset me to the point of having to write.

Don you are right, this is a very personal and controversial subject.  My best friend David, who had been a brother to me since I was 4 years old, died of AIDS when I had only been in Canada for 3 months.  There are few of my friends who have not been touched by an AIDS related death.  My personal feelings are probably stronger on this subject than on most but that aside, to sit in judgement and hatred/loathing of a fellow human being, whatever their sexual orientation/race or creed is something that can not go unchallenged.

Cliff your point to Cameron that homosexuality is "unnatural" because it doesn't occur in the animal kingdom is also factually incorrect.  You won't have to search very hard on the internet to find lengthy informed, educated and well documented papers which site that it is in fact a very natural occurrence in the animal world.  Dave, you also agree with the view point and set aside the whole nature/nurture argument by stating categorically that homosexuality is a choice and not human nature.  The world's leading scientists are unable to reach the same conclusion as yourself.  If you had been touched by the life of a gay person, and had witnessed first hand the struggles they have in a heterosexual society, seen how much hatred they face, how many are exiled from the families, lose their friends, the respect of others, are judged, hated and loathed, I would hope that you  might reconsider your position that people "chose" this lifest yle for fun or to upset other people.  It is far from being an easy path to take, in fact I have rarely seen such pain and struggle than that lived by homosexual friends, whose lives are often torn apart by their sexuality.

This family is capable of great love and understanding.  It would be wonderful if just a little of that could be applied to this subject, and the feelings and lives of others respected.

Janine
