So the government decided to make the web registration page free, to try to encourage registration there instead of using up employees time answering the phone and processing mailed-in applications. However, it has been discovered that these applications are not being vetted by any live people - anything entered in the web form is simply printed out and mailed to the registree.
The web form allows the entry of "unknown" for descriptions of the firearm, in the case that the manufacturer, model, etc. is in fact unknown. However, people have figured out that you can in fact enter "unknown" for every single field in the form - and you receive just such a form, legally registering a firearm to you that has no description of any kind:
- I went online and did some registering of my own. Would you
believe it: when I tried it out I asked myself, "are these forms
just being printed out and mailed by computer?" My best guess
is yes.
- I now have here a registration form for an "unknown" firearm of "unknown" model "unknown" caliber "unknown" serial number. All fields in the form are "unknown." How could a human miss this? Does this mean my registration is now good for any firearm that I wear (or file?) the markings off of?

- On the Internet, reregistering of restricted firearms they are
changing the information about the firearm and guessing too. I have a
couple of new registration certificates that don't even begin to match
the old green slip or the firearm.... especially regarding the
"make" of the firearm.
