My case provides some clarification to the above statement. When I received
my cable modem, my Asante 4-port hub did indeed allow all computers to
access the internet, but only one computer at a time. And to go from using
one computer to another, I had to "refresh" the modem by shutting it down
for two minutes as explained in the modem instructions. I knew this would
be the case in advance from reading listservs like this one. (Thanks to all
you folks.) Now that I have an Asante router/switch, all computers have
internet access simultaneously.
