Kim, your modem is probably fried. If you try different phone cable and
a different phone jack with the same results you can be pretty sure
that's what the problem is.

While it is possible to replace the modem it is not for the feint of
heart or for someone with their iMac still under warranty. If it is
still under warranty you may be able to get it replaced by an authorized
dealer. Just tell them that it suddenly doesn't work.

If it is not under warranty, it is possible to replace the internal
modem. The procedure is different for the tray loading iMac and the
slot loading iMac, but in either case it requires removal of the logic
board (among other things). If you are not afraid of doing the repair
yourself go for it if you can find the part (try looking here
<http://lowendmac.com/dealers/service.shtml>. If you take it to an
apple authorized repair shop it will cost you $80/hr + the part (prob
$150). You can buy a new external USB modem for around $100 or less.

Maybe a higher power is telling you to upgrade to DSL or cable? :-)
