Okay. First, you may wish to check the back of the machine carefully, as
there may be a modem already there. According to
<http://lowendmac.com/pb/540.shtml>, the 540 and 540c both came standard
with a Global Village 19.2 kbps modem.

According to <http://lowendmac.com/pb/540c.shtml>, this modem fits into a
proprietary modem slot, so there may be trouble finding one if you don't
have one already. I don't really know though. You might have luck asking
around on the PowerBook list at
<http://lowendmac.com/lists/powerbooks.shtml> or the LEM Swap list at
<http://lowendmac.com/lists/swap.html>.

doesn't have a PCMCIA slot, or at least, it's not necessary to use it for a
modem.

To my knowledge, you need no special adapter either.

Also, if you cannot find a modem port on the back of your machine nor are
you able to locate a suitable internal modem to install, then you do have a
standard serial port (not a GeoPort) which you could reasonably attach any
normal modem to, just as you would a desktop Mac.
