My grampa used to be a journeyman electrician and an eletronics tinkerer 
and when I was a kid he'd explain how things worked & why. He told me 
that the colored bands on the resistor tells all about them. For the 
life of me I can't tell you what they represent. Sorry

If there is an old electronics book in the library, I'm sure it'll have 
an explanation.
