I use OSX almost exclusively, but my wife & daughter use OS9, and I've found that manually entering the IP numbers for all the machines is faster and more stable. Since I'm using all Macs, three with Airport & one with Ethernet via a hub, my mileage may be different than yours. I had problems with USB Print Sharing not working when there were dynamic IP address' and the Macs were shut down at night. ABS gave a new IP every time a Mac booted if there was more than a few minutes between and the print sharing stores the IP address not an alias (or whatever you call it)
