I just bought a Linksys 8 port DSL Router and like it very much. I have Macs and PCs on my network. I run Appletalk behind the router. Works fine. I don't know about Timbuktu. The Linksys cost me $130 factory sealed on Ebay. Local CompUSA wanted $179.00.
If you decide that a router is what you need (as opposed to a switch) you might want to read the current copy of PC Magazine (with BROADBAND on the cover). They review all the routers and have good charts. Not because I am smart, but just by accident, I picked the Editors Choice for home routers with my Linksys. Linksys told me they don't offically support Macs, but they pointed me to mac web pages and gave me tips anyway.
