Hi Everyone I have a very simple home Localtalk network, so everyone can use my Laserwriter II NTX. I currently have 6 Macs on it:
7300/G3 upgrade to 288MHZ running OS 9.1 - My main computer, used everyday 8100/80 running OS 8.1 - used as a fax/answering machine with Teleport 3.1.3 7200/75 running OS 7.6 7200/75 running OS 8.6 5300/100 running OS 8.1 SE/30 running OS 7.5.5 All are used for different reasons and by different people. I also have 3 pc's in the house 733Mhz running Windows XP professional - Spouse's machine 266Mhz running Win98 SE 166Mhz running Win98 SE All of them are capable of using ethernet. I have a cable connection that I currently only have my 7300/G3 and the 733Mhz pc hooked up to. I use software firewall protection on both. I do not have a router and I know very little about ethernet networking. I do have a 16 port hub that I would like everybody to be hooked up to. I have already been told that a router is the best way to go but I don't have a router and I have very little money at the moment. I do have additional (2)7200/75's, (2)7100/60's, a Quadra 610 and one older hp with dual 120mhz processor in the house if needed to create a server/firewall with maybe some kind of *nix OS. As far as software is concerned we do have Win2000 Advanced Server (which we did have installed on the 733mhz machine but the cable company complained that it was trying to take over their server) and Appleshare 6.2, Redhat Linux 7.1, Mandrake Linux, and Netware 5.0 (Which my other half bought fully intending to use but never has) I don't have a clue how to use any of them. What would be the best way give all of my machines access to the internet? I don't need to have a mail server but possibility of a web server in the near future would be nice. I know Localtalk networks pretty well (and I don't want to loose the ability to print to the Laserwriter II NTX or loose my fax machine) but beyond that I don't have a clue what to do - all suggestions would be appreciated.
