"Serial" usually means directly connected to a serial port with a straight wire. When you select a true serial printer in the chooser you get to choose between the Printer Port and the Modem Port. Most HP DeskWriters can be either serial or localtalk. If you use a serial cable and the plain deskwriter driver, it is serial. If you use localtalk (phonenet) cabling and the appletalk deskwriter driver, it is localtalk. In this case, the Chooser shows one or more named printers instead of the physical port. The DeskWriters do not have hardware settings between serial and localtalk, it is all in the cable and driver. Most Apple printers are only serial or only localtalk. Some have hardware options to upgrade to localtalk from serial. For example, the ImageWriter II has a localtalk card option and the StyleWriter 2500 has an optional "wart" that makes it localtalk. Most of the apple drivers support both modes, e.g. the StyleWriter 2500 driver will let you choose among Printer Port, Modem Port, and any named 2500's on the network. Your symptoms sound like you may be using the LaserWriter Bridge instead of the LocalTalk Bridge. If you switch back to AppleTalk on the Printer port, and can select and use a named DeskWriter using the AppleTalk DeskWriter driver and a named StyleWriter 4100, your hardware is good and the LocalTalk Bridge control panel should work, but the LaserWriter Bridge will not.
