Jim, I'm pretty much a newbie at the networking thing, but as no one else
as answered, I'll give it a shot:

#1)  You can use a teminal emulation program, such as Z Term, or Black
Night if both machines re running it. I have never use them to call my
machine, but I do use them to dial into the text-only service of our local
community net. They both use zmodem protocol for file transfer.

#2) Run one of the machines as a web server. Use Mac HTTP. Then you would
be able to log on at home using regular internet protocol via a browser. I
have never done this myself, though I hope to in the not-to-distant future.
