Not all iMacs have an Airport slot. None have PCI or PCMCIA.

As for fixing your problem. I was only able to find one USB to -any- 
ethernet adapter. Macsense <www.macsense.com> has a USB Wi-Fi adaptor. 
You'll need to have a Wi-Fi base in order to use this, but $200 (maybe 
less) is cheaper than a new mainboard.

One note, the OSX driver is still in public beta. They say that it is 
very stable, but YMMV. The OS9 driver is already finished.
