Laurie,

Don't give up. I bought one of those MacSense XRouter Pro a couple of 
years ago and I'm still using it. I am on cable and I don't use PPOE, 
but i know it should be able to work for you. There have been some 
firmware upgrades available since then which might make it more 
compatible with your PPOE service. I haven't applied them, as my router 
works fine, and has been for years now.

Basically, you plug your modem into the UPLINK or WAN port on the 
Router, and your mac on any other port (there's 4 LAN ports on mine). 
Then configure your mac to use

ip: 192.168.1.2
router: 192.168.1.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

and point your webbrowser to 192.168.1.1

login with default password (in manual) and set it up.
