1 i always hear that if file sharing is turned on i get a speed hit, but i want to have a file server. any thoughts about this?
File Sharing does hve a performance hit, but it's not that bad. I use it at a number of homes and small businesses...
2 i have a IIci that is running 6.0.8 with a network card. i know i am on the appletalk zone because it tells me, and i can access the printers, but i cannot set up the network time control panel because the machine cannot get all the neccesary IP stuff. how do i find this stuff out i.e. domain name, etc.? i know it is very old school but i like to show my students what was available when they were young tykes.
AppleTalk and IP are totally seperate networks. To use IP, you need to install an IP stack. MacTCP is the more common one. If you don't have the MacTCP control panel, and can't find it, contact me off-list.
Your school probably uses DHCP to assign addresses? I don't recall if MacTCP supported DHCP very well. You might have to cozy up to your network admins and get them to assign the machine a static ip. ...Or you could upgrade the IIci to Mac OS 7.6.1 and run Open Transport...
The Mac IIci. Great machine! :) You know www.apple.com was, for a number of years, drivin by a cluster of IIci's? I have a IIci sitting here. It was the first computer I ever personally bought (usta use my roomie's Plus and II). Can't bare to part with it! Currently using it as a small file server, running OS 7.6.1, File Sharing, and NetPresenz (ftp and http).
