What you can do is check the Monitors control panel. There should be an
option for displaying the Recommended resolutions, and that popup *may*
have a choice for displaying ALL resolutions.

I vaguely remember seeing an Apple tech note about hooking up powerbooks to projectors - odd resolutions etc. Prolly worth searching.
