Hi

my 2 cents. PC as a file server is partly do-able. For free or no-cost limits your choices.

If you want to do it on the cheap I think the Mac OS X client box is a better (and cheaper) fileserver. With built-in ftp, afp and smb (mac and pc file sharing) and web serving too, it's hard to beat.

Other free client/server might be useful to you in moving info back and forth on your LAN or even to the outside world. On Mac you can install a Carracho server for Mac clients, and a KDX server (version 0.951 is still free and useful) for Mac and PC clients. The PC can also be a KDX server with Mac and PC clients and this is a fast and easy way to move files, have built-in chat and newsgroups.

between ftp, file sharing, www, and other cheap (or shareware) client/server solutions there are many ways to make Macs and PCs work together.

Hope this helps,

Using your lone peecee as a file and web server is easy enough to do,
but it's also costly... For the file serving, you can do SMB or FTP.
You'll need packages like DAVE to fill in the functionality holes. FWIW,
