Assuming your router has several ethernet ports:

Forget about the hub. Plug your various computers into the ethernet ports on the router (except for the WAN (Wide Area Network) port). Make sure all your computers are set to use a DHCP server via ethernet in their TCP/IP control panels (or the Network pane in OS X system preferences).

Use a web browser on one of the connected computers to access the router's admin page. There typically will be a button to obtain a DHCP list. Make sure all your computers show up in this list.

Plug your cable modem into the router's WAN port.

Again using the router's admin page, set up to connect to your ISP via your cable modem. You may need to clone the MAC address and copy the DHCP client ID from the computer that your ISP had hooked up to your cable modem.

You should now be able to access the internet from any of the computers connected to the router. The router's firewall provides protection, so you can disable any software firewalls in the individual computers.

Good luck!

I just signed on with Bresnan.net and can't get over how fast cable is

But!

I can't (they say) connect my home network.

I have a SMC Barricade router and a Friendlinet Hub, which has been
connected to a GV 56k modem. I have been running OSX 10.2.8 (Jag)

The Cable modem has an ethernet and a USB connection.

Right now (they set it up) the cable modem is connected to my ethernet port
on the 8500, precluding connection to my home network and preventing a
firewall .-(

I tried a connection from the cable modem to the router to the hub, but
even after after switching things around I still could not access the
internet on the other computers on the network.

What can I do to restore my network and firewall?
