I was going to suggest that a memory upgrade would help, but that is best used for complex layouts -- Explorer usually does not need the extra memory so that is probably not the issue.
Two things might be happening: you have the "endless loop" error or the Laserwriter preferences are corrupt. If the "failed to print" error is consistent, search Apple's Tech Info Library for Knowledge Base article 30413: "Macintosh Desktop Printing: 'Endless Loop' Issue". It has symptoms and instructions to fix it. Following these instructions will fix the corrupt preferences issue as well. (Thanks to David Pogue for this answer.) Hope this works for you.
