SSID is the name of your network. You make it up and assign it. All of the computers and the base station have to use the same SSID.

Also, make sure you enable WEP - you will need to assign a WEP key for that

The SSID makes it clear which network you are connecting to. Or it would if more people assigned their own SSID. I was setting up a network for a client and first looked at with one of the Stumbler apps (scans for all wireless networks detectable). There were two or three other nets active. One had the default SSID and I think another had a customized name. I strongly recommend setting it to something distinct. You may want to make it identifiable (Joe's Wireless Network or such) or not, depending on your situation.

If you have two or more base stations you can give them the same SSID and your computers can move between them seamlessly (in theory).

Something else people do is to use the default channel. This means they most likely do not check for currently used channels. Do so one could potentially stomp on someone else's setup and vice versa. So if your wireless network stops working or slows way down it is worthwhile to check what basestations are currently visible and the channels they are using.
