Hello, Cap! I have done this myself with a TiBook and a B&W with a FireWire external HD. I am assuming that you are running Panther and you already have file sharing enabled on your "server" so that you can mount its internal disks on your iBook.
1. Mount the FireWire drive on your desktop machine. 2. Do a "get info" on the relevant FireWire volume. 3. Click the triangle for "Ownership & Permissions" to open it if necessary. 4. Click the triangle for "Details" to open it. 5. Set "others" to "read & Write" 6. In a Finder window on your iBook, Select "Network", and then double click on the icon of your desktop Mac. Enter a password if asked. 7. Once that opens up, select the name of the external drive. You may ask why, if you can properly log onto your desktop Mac and have access to its internal drives, you need additional permission for external drives.
