Greetings, I teach in a small church run school. We have a variety of Macs and windows machines. I have all the Macs in my room. They range from LC550, LC575, to Umax C500 to PowerMac 6100 (g3 upgrade) to g3 MT. They are running systems from 7.5.5 to 9.2.2. I currently have them all networked with Appletalk and we are planning on networking the entire school with ethernet. A couple of questions:
a. With proper cards will all of these work on an ethernet?
Yes, but why bother? The cards for the LC's aren't cheap and they're a PITA. IMO, it might be better to just continue to use AppleTalk (LocalTalk; PhoneNet) and bridge it to Ethernet at a single point.
b. What would be the best OS to use for an ethernet?
System 7.5.5 and newer is fine for ethernet support. A more driving issue might be what client applications you want to run?... If your move to ethernet implies a move to IP and accessing the Internet, then many of the apps you may want will require OS 8.6 or 9.
It's difficult to give a more detailed recommendation without knowing your ultimate goal. Do you want to just move your AppleTalk network, with only it's current services (file and printer sharing) from LocalTalk or PhoneNet to EtherTalk? Or do you want to add TCP/IP services as well - to permit Internet connectivity (web surfing, etc)?
