I have seen it here in San Diego, they put them on light poles and cover the major freeways I -5, I -15, I- 8, works good, as you say for a few miles but here that is a LOT of potential customers. I think what your looking at is similar to what a company called Ricochet provides, while not in your area you might be able to check the tech and see if it's close to what Ricochet offers

Also I heard that Dish Network was going to put up a bird for satellite internet in a few months. They used to do just the billing for Star Band and advertise the service but cut that relationship and Star Band is on their own on their own. Dish was supposed to be online last fall but the French Rocket exploded on lift off in late Nay I think, hence the year late.
I am still with Star Band and they for sure had problems when one satellite the lease got hit by a piece of space junk but all in all using their 481 system I have been happy, even when they had LOS because of damage, I called at 6 am EST and they switched me to a new bird right away. I was down about 5 hours. They have have been consistent in speeds, I am signed up 500 k I see 550 to 600 and late at night will hit
1 MB, faster being the majority as as opposed to slower
I can tell you looking into this about like I did, very carefully, took me 4 months.
I can say all in all I have been happy and from the reports I read Direct Way is pretty flashy, but when they get that signed contract the got you. Good luck, I understand the pain of 28k

Thanks for the info, Bob. Yours is the only response that I received. Where I am located, cable & DSL are NOT options and I was seriously looking at DirecWay when I heard about this. From what the rep told me, the access point is on a mountain about 14 miles away so a parabolic reflector will be needed to boost the signal strength. If it is better than the 28.8 connection I currently have, then I'm ahead. The monthly price is double what I pay now, but half of what DirecWay would charge.
