ACK!!

Check your local fire code before you spend money on Plenum rated cable.
Expect plenum rated to be 2 to 3 times the price of non plenum rated.

Also, depending on where you are using it, it is irrelevant. In wall
isn't the issue. "Plenum" is the air space above suspended ceilings. If
you have central air, and a suspended ceiling AND the suspended ceiling
is used for air return to the system (not common, most systems are closed
and have ducted returns), then you should have Plenum rated cable. Any
other instance, only bother using it if your fire code tells you to use
it (some places require it for everything that interacts with common air
space. That may include walls, and ceilings).

The "Plenum" rated cable is made with a treated plastic jacket that
doesn't put out toxic fumes when burned (well, not AS toxic at least...
often the treatment is a coating of teflon which does put out toxic fumes
at temps in excess of 500 degrees, which a good fire will easily exceed,
so you are really only protected from smoldering cable, not burning
cable).

The idea is, if you are putting the cable in a common air way (ie: in a
suspended ceiling with a non ducted return), then you would use Plenum
rated cable. That way, if a fire starts, and the cable burns, there won't
be toxic gases sucked into the ventilation system and spread thru the
building killing people long before the smoke from the fire alerts them
to a problem.

Most areas don't care about having Plenum rated cable in walls, as they
are unlikely to spread the fumes anyway. And since most construction uses
ducted air returns, many areas don't care about using them in the ceiling
as well (some areas do care for ceilings, since it isn't uncommon for an
entire floor of a building to share a common ceiling space. While it may
not act as an air return, it is still open between offices, and thus may
spread the toxic gases before the smoke).

Do check your local fire code if in doubt. Each area is different.
