First you need to I.D. which Base Station you have and DL the manual and the correct software for that model the manual will tell you most of what you need, there is a set up assistant that comes with the software. There is software for the base station it's self and software for the computer your using

Set up is usually painless and in the set up will be your settings for letting the whole apartment share or just you. That will require a login and password. Highly recommended. The level of of security is also Base Station dependent and set by you. So it's all there, after reading the manual, 5 pages?? on which model you have , then questions can be more specific. The lights indicate that it works.. the middle is usually the power light the left facing power from your connection, the right facing activity is being sent and returned.

If all three are working and your not connected well you may want to take collections; the Base Station Extreme can send out a signal to 54 users and if someone uses another as a bridge to keep the signal going. You could be the local ISP for free..It is not unusual for neighbors especially. Or bikers, walkers to move around and for fun and find a signal to see if they can get on easily or break the password. So go back to the top where it says First and then you will laugh a bit at what I just put downg. When your safe and snug. Now OS X allows you to keep others off by using passive FTP. But time to get the manual and correct software for your airport.
Good luck and have fun
Geoff

I recently got an Airport Base Station working at my home and can surf
the web wirelessly but I am now a bit worried about the security of this network. After all, getting this set up was a lark in that I was merely doing it to see if I could. But now that I have it, I would like to keep
it as secure as possible.
First of all; how can I tell whether or not it is encrypted and secure
Swcond; how do I encrypt it and secure it or maybe this should be first. Third; Is there anyway to tell whether an outsider is using the network.
There are so many lights flashing and the Base Station is constantly
flicking and lights moving i have no Idea what's going on.
I guess is what I get for playing with fire.
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance and/or help in this matter.
