Anyway, I have DSL now and the modem is supposed to be also a router (I don't fully understand these things). Optus, my ISP, does not support Macs but techies will chat to me informally and they said this, I asked if this was in respect to the fact that it has USB and ethernet and "yes".
Sounds like a basic NAT router. How do you configure the "modem"? Do you go to a particular web page & tell it your login details and so on? Can you choose the IP address that the "inside" - your side - of the connection has? If so, it's a router. And as such it'll do basic firewalling, yes. No harm in using the Mac's firewalling instead, but you don't /really/ need it. I leave mine turned off behind my NAT router - a cheapo Alcatel 510 which I was given for free. -- Liam Proven · Blog, homepage &c: http://lproven.livejournal.com/profile Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] · GMail/Google Talk/Orkut: [EMAIL PROTECTED] AOL/AIM/iChat: [EMAIL PROTECTED] · MSN/Messenger: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo: [EMAIL PROTECTED] · Skype: liamproven · ICQ: 73187508 -- MacNetwork is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
