Thanks Marc. I’ve managed to confirm you’re right, and MPC still works even if
I turn Bluetooth off. (Interestingly AirDrop requires Bluetooth to be turned
on, which is where I got the idea that it had to be using that).

However, even with Bluetooth switched off, this still doesn’t solve my distance
problem. With the two computers positioned c. 25 metres apart, I can easily
create an ad-hoc Wifi network on one which shows about 4 bars signal strength
on the other (RSSI around -55 dBM). But in my MPC app, it doesn't start seeing
the other peer until I move my laptop to about half the distance (about 10 m
apart).

So why then is the proximity of 25m good enough for joining ad-hoc Wifi
networks, but not good enough for browsing MPC services over Wifi?

(As an aside, if I go ahead join the ad-hoc Wifi network I created, the MPC
service suddenly shows up in the client’s service browser… I thought the point
of MPC was that you *didn’t* have to be part of a network for it to work…?)

Thanks
Michael
