FileMaker Mobile 2 is now available

Richer interface, new features deliver load-and-go information -- another step toward
a paperless future?
FileMaker has announced the immediate availability of FileMaker Mobile 2 Companion for
the Palm OS (Multilingual version), new release of the software allowing users to
transfer and synchronize data between FileMaker Pro 5.5 v2 databases on desktop
computers and Palm OS handhelds.
"With its expanded number of fields per file, enhanced data entry options and improved
list views, FileMaker Mobile 2 fulfills the promise of using a Palm device for
electronic data collection in the field," said Doyle Williamson, professional
inspector for Texcode, Inc. "I''ve replaced our old paper reporting system with one
based on FileMaker Mobile 2 and reduced my liability for each inspection, and saved
precious time in the process. Using FileMaker Mobile 2, I anticipate a US$2,000
savings per year in printing costs," added Williamson.
FileMaker Mobile 2 users can transfer up to 50 fields per record from a desktop
FileMaker Pro 5.5 v2 database to a Palm OS handheld and new interface features in
FileMaker Mobile 2 give users of Palm-powered handhelds a richer mobile interface. The
new software supports Mac OS X, Mac OS and Windows desktop computers.
FileMaker Mobile 2 requires FileMaker Pro 5.5 v2, and is priced at US$49 (single-unit
price). FileMaker Mobile 1 registered users are entitled to a free downloadable
upgrade to FileMaker Mobile 2.
Analysis: Products such as this tell me that the days of the bound paper notebook and
pen are numbered. There''re still quite a few days left before I''ll head out to
interviews with a dreaded PDA, or whatever variant is available then, but it''s going
to happen. I have yet to meet a PDA I liked luddite that I am.
