Umax redux continues
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
June 3rd 2002
The Register has picked up on the story and offers a few new details
Each new website to pick on this story manages to glean new details, but it''s
apparent that Umax''s stonewalling is keeping us all in the dark to one degree or
another. Here are the salient details that The Register has managed to add to this
twisted tale:
 Umax is charging up to US$60 per CD + shipping + state sales tax for some drivers
and the minimum charge is US$60;
 Apparently, the reason I and others haven''t been able to contact Umax US is that
the contact info listed on their website is inaccurate or out of date. The Reg says
that Umax US, which is based in Dallas, isn''t listed in any local business
directories in that city. Attempts to contact them using the number listed in its
WhoIs listing failed as well;
 Umax''s technical support is outsourced and this outfit offered this, "''most of our
users are on dial-up Internet''" and since the drivers themselves were quite big, this
was the most cost-efficient way of distributing the code, honestly," according to The
Reg.
Analysis: As Umax US increasingly looks to be a phantom company, it''s probably not a
good idea to purchase their products. It''s difficult to fathom how this one-time
industry leader managed to so quickly denigrate and obfuscate itself.
