QuickTime 6.0 Public Preview Debuts

MPEG-4 and a bundle of new technologies.
Apple today released its preview of QuickTime 6.0, which incorporates support for
MPEG-4, MPEG-4 File Format, AAC Audio, Instant-On, Skip Protection, Updated User
Interface, DVC Pro PAL video codec, support for Macromedia Flash 5, a new JPEG 2000
still image codec for Mac OS X, and enhanced AppleScript support.
While licensing issues have clouded the release of the MPEG-4 codec, Apple has
previously said that QuickTime 4.0 was essentially finished. The final version is
expected to ship with Jaguar (OS X 10.2).
Apple notes that the Preview will work with the QuickTime Pro 5.0x key, although the
final version of QT 6.0 will require a new license.
QuickTime 6.0 runs on OS 8.6, 9.x, OS 10.1.3 and later, and Windows NT, 98, Me, 2000
and XP. Mac requirements are: any PowerPC Mac and 32MB RAM.
