MediaFour Releases iPod for Windows Beta 1
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
June 12th 2002

XPlay moves one step closer to final version.

MediaFour have delivered their Windows-compatible software for iPod, XPlay. Currently
in beta, XPlay works with Windows Me, 98SE, 2000 and XP.

XPlay joins MacOpener and ephPod in the Windows iPod software market. However,
MediaFour warn of the beta quality of XPlay and recommend not using XPlay with iPods
containing mission-critical data.

Given the number Windows coming out bringing iPod functionality to Windows, the big
question remains as to whether Apple will develop iTunes or a similar product for
Windows. The 5 and now 10GB iPods have been spectacularly successful, quickly building
a major niche in the portable MP3 market.

The free beta of XPlay is available here.

Analysis: An important market for a dual-platform iPod would be Mac users who also
have Windows machines (and vice versa).

Apple will doubtless use the Windows iPod market as a testing ground to see if iPod
sales pick up due to its new-found connectivity. If they do, then we wouldn''t be
surprised if Apple bought the best-performing iPod-4-Windows software company and made
it its own. After all, it''s happened before.
