Internet Explorer 6.0: Mac Waiting in the Wings

IE 5.5 may be dead in the water, 6.0 coming.
Nick de Plume at ThinkSecret reports that Microsoft''s IE 6.0 for Mac is due sooner
rather than later.
The story says that the Mac BU at MS has shifted development to 6.0, rather than an
incremental 5.5 interim update. ThinkSecret states that significant speed improvements
are anticipated, which may put the Mac version on par with the Windows editions of IE.
The release of OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) may be what MS is waiting for, in order to gain
improved web browser performance, something which has also proven problematic in OS X
for Opera, iCab, Netscape and OmniWeb, as the current iteraiton of OS X is not
optimized for browser page rendering performance.
It is not clear whether IE 6.0 will be available as a Carbon application or whether
there will be both OS X and OS 9 versions.
Analysis: IE for Mac has lagged behind its Windows counterparts for some time now and
IE 6 will demonstrate the extent to which MS is still committed to the Mac market. IE
is integral to MS''s .Net strategy, however, and that is enough incentive for MS - and
the MacBU - to push strongly for feature and performance parity for the browser across
platforms.
