What the Son of eMate Might Have Been - and it''s Available Now

It''s an ePod! It''s an iMate! It''s a...Dana.
What''s an eMate running the Palm OS look like? Why, the Dana, of course.
AlphaSmart Inc. has announced the Dana, a Palm-OS based micro notebook, that bears an
uncanny resemblance to Apple''s old eMate - without the clamshell.
It also boasts a distinctly un-eMate-like price: $399. And it runs over 10,000 Palm OS
applications. It also boasts an LCD screen 3.5 times larger than the ''typical''
handheld, as well as a full-size keyboard. Like other handhelds, it also supports
screen-based handwriting recognition using a stylus.
Dana also supports SecureDigital and Multimedia flash memory cards, as well as USB and
IrDA printing. AlphaSmart positions the Dana as a ''laptop alternative''. They''re
also targeting it at the education market, and promise a ''back-to-school'' shipping
date.
The Dana runs on 3 AA batteries, comes with a rechargeable battery pack, an AC
adapter, and ships with 8MB of system memory. A compact 1.9" H x 12.4 " W x 9.3" D,
and weighing in at 2lbs, Dana comes bundled with a full suite of software utilities.

Analysis: We can see a strong market for the Dana, although personally, if pushed,
I''d probably opt for a cheapie used PowerBook, despite the weight, as I like to keep
everything on one ''Book. But if you need more than a Palm-sized handheld, and less
than an iBook, a Dana could be just the ticket.
