Altera Releases CD/DVD Shredder
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
June 24th 2002
The ultimate disc disposal tool.
Work for Anderson''s? Enron? A tobacco company perhaps? Or maybe your sister''s Celine
Dion CD collection has just grown a second head.
Alera''s CD/DVD Shredder is labelled a ''data security tool'', capable of shredding up
to 30 discs per minute.
AleraTec quite reasonably argues that with proliferating storage of data on optical
discs, security concerns become paramount, even if it''s simply old backups or
out-of-date information.
"Responding to growing market demand for safety and security Alera Technologies is
proud to offer perhaps the simplest, quick and easy method of preventing misuse of
sensitive data recorded on discarded discs ," states
Perry Solomon, President and CEO of Alera Technologies. "With a DVD or CD falling
into the wrong hands you could lose all of your personal financial records, business
customer lists, an entire accounting system or more. With
the growing threat of hazards like identity theft the DVD/CD Shredder provides the
protection and peace of mind you need at a very low cost, and it''s available only
from Alera Technologies."
For businesses in the habit of shredding paper documents, this is likely to be the
next stage in secure disposal of data. As AleraTec points out, standard CDRs hold the
equivalent of 80 four-draw cabinets of text, while a DVD can hold 560 cabinets'' worth.
The DVD/CD Shredder is available for $59.99. Specifications and ordering information
is available at AleraTec.
Analysis: I always find the microwave oven method pretty secure, but I''m sure you
have lots of better ideas.
