A New Apple PDA? Apple said to shopping for a manufacturer?

A report out of Taiwan states Apple is outsourcing a PDA for manufacturing.
Three weeks to a Macworld Expo and no PDA rumors? What''s that about? Well never fear,
an IGM reader passed along a link to an Asia Biz Tech article talking up Apple''s
growing manufacturing orders in Taiwan. The article states that in addition contracts
for iBook, PowerBook, eMac and iMac manufacturing, Apple is looking for someone to
make a personal digital assistant (PDA), in addition to some other products, in Taiwan.
"...Apple is seeking production of personal digital assistants (PDAs) and some
computer peripherals, such as its wireless communications access points, namely
airports, in Taiwan."
Apple has been knocking down perennial Macworld Expo rumors in 2002, such as the LCD
iMac, 17-inch iMac, rack-mount server and even handwriting recognition, to name a few
of the mainstream players. Could a PDA be next?
If precedent has any pull, the answer is unlikely. Even though Steve Jobs is believed
to have made an informal move to buy Palm, recent comments from the iCEO have since
been cold towards the PDA market. Just looking at Palm''s stock price may be proof
enough of the unfertile PDA market, as the company is trading around $1.50, down from
around $60 in the heyday. More importantly, astute readers may have noticed one
product missing from the laundry list of Made in Taiwan products -- the iPod. For
those with good memories, the Apple PDA rumor surfaced last year from Taiwan when it
was confused for the iPod. Could these PDA rumors be confused for Apple''s MP3
sensation?
But who knows. If it''s cool, shiny and has an Apple logo, legions of Mac users will
certainly line up to buy a PDA. I know I probably would.
