X-bytes: Drive that scanner with VueScan
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
July 3rd 2002

Some of the more interesting X-compatible software and updates

• Don''t bemoan the lack of X-compatible drivers for your scanner, get VueScan.
Version 7.5.33 includes support for LinoHell scanners, and fixes some problems with
Microtek and Umax scanners. VueScan sells for $40 and is available for both Mac OS X
and Classic (8.0 or higher).

• Tired of downloading "artistic" photos of women one at a time from Usenet? Then
NewsHunter 2.0 is the utility for you. This widget can automatically download images
and files from Usenet newsgroups. X and Classic-compatible versions of NewsHunter are
available for $49.95

• MailArmor 1.1, a Java-based spam filtering program, features black and white-list
filtering. This program can automagically bounce spam back to the sender. This program
is available for both X and Classic (9.0 or higher, requires Java VM 1.1 or higher),
as well as Linux, Unix, and Windows. It costs $15.

• Time Palette 5.1 is a $29.95 world time and mapping application for Mac OS X and
Classic (8.6 or higher). This latest update adds a revised map and includes a new city
database with updated time zone data.

• MacAT 6.2 is an automated task scheduling application for server administrators
that can schedule/automate 42 of the most common tasks. This app sells for $49.

A suggestion for Apple

Paste Without Style! 2.0 is an XTension that works with Quark 4/5. It does precisely
what it''s name implies -- pastes text where you want without any embedded style(s).
This is a function that should be included in the OS.

Text cleaners often introduce as many problems as they remove and 99 times out of a
100, at least in my experience, all we really want is just the text -- no adornments,
no formatting.
