Alas, where are Levitus, Pogue et al?
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

The Mac world''s brightest lights have been silent almost to a man on the issue of
Macworld press passes
As is their wont, the mavens of digital dish at The Register have once again shamed
the "world + dog" with a forthright article on the silence of the Mac world''s elite
on the issue of Apple''s ham-handed attempt to shut out grassroots publishers.
"Apple''s wealthiest and most prominent celebrity cheerleaders have yet to break their
silence on the company''s culling of its grassroots publishers," states The
Register''s Andrew Orlowski.
One of the few to actually speak up is David Coursey who has promised he will try to
sneak a few of the snubbed into Macworld New York using his ZDNet credentials.
Lawyers run amok?
Among those denied press passes is MacFixit -- the bellwether of online self help from
the Mac masses. Why on earth would these folks be denied? What imbecile(s) made this
decision? Naturally, one''s mind turns toward lawyers and their antics.
Orlowski sums up the policy well -- "The indiscriminate nature of the ''rumor'' site
ban -- which turns out not to be a ''rumor'' site ban at all -- suggests Apple and IDG
Expo are determined to make a symbolic gesture of humiliation, rather than clamp down
on rumors. Pick a few out at random, and string them up - pour encourager les autres
(to encourage the others).
"I wonder if we''ll see the Pogue''s, Inhankto''s and Levitus'' actually bat for the
grassroots that gave them their jobs?" one editor rhetorically asked The Register.
Obviously, Coursey aside, these so-called journalists value good relations with Apple
more than they value their First Amendment rights. Honestly, how long will it be
before Apple seeks to muzzle them? Then again, does Apple need to muzzle them?
