MCE Ships Slinky Titanium 24x Portable FireWire CDRW
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
July 10th 2002

Fast, portable, stylish.

MCE today announced their new 24x Lucid portable CDRW. The FireWire-based ultra-slim,
portable drive matches the PowerBook G4 perfectly, although naturally it works with
any FireWire-equipped Mac (or Windows PC).

The Lucid reads and writes at 24x, and rewrites at 10x, so a full 74-minute CDR takes
around 3 minutes to burn. The CDRW is equipped with a 2MB buffer. Weighing in a
14.3oz, (405g), the burner measures only 5.5 x 6.5 x 0.8 in (140 x 165 x 22 mm), or
not much bigger than a CD itself.

Software requirements are OS 8.6 or later, or OS X 10.1 or later. MCE bundle the drive
with Toast Lite.

The Lucid 24x is available immediately for $299 from MCE.

Analysis: If you have a burnerless TiBook, this is a practical and attractive addition
to your PowerBook. The price is not low, but it is much more compact than most
third-party 5.25" FireWire enclosures on the market - so you''re paying for the
portability. Owners of G3 PowerBooks and all CDRW-less iBooks might also consider it
for multiple machines and as an alternative to the expansion bay CDRWs.
