Apple posts security update

A widely reported Software Update hole gets plugged

Apple has posted Security Update 7-12-02. Here''s a quote from the "Read Me" for the
low down on what it fixes and how:

"Security Update 7-12-02 increases the security of the Software Update process for
systems with Software Update client 1.4.5 or earlier. Packages presented via the
Software Update mechanism are now cryptographically signed, and the new Software
Update client 1.4.6 checks for a valid signature before installing new packages.
Downloaded packages which do not contain a valid signature are deleted from the
system."

Unlike "other" software makers, Apple offers users the choice of downloading and
installing this patch via the OS'' built-in updater or as a stand alone installer. The
import of this choice lies in the ability of hackers -- i.e. the same people who
uncovered and publicly announced the existence of this problem -- to dissect it at
their leisure.

It appears that only the English-language version of this updater is currently
available.
