By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac July 15th 2002 The road to PowerBook DVD-R: how long? Sony Thursday announced it would ship a high-end Vaio model with a built-in slim-line DVD-R/RW. Sony plans to ship the new DVD-R Vaios in September, although prices have not yet been announced. The Vaio will feature a 16" LCD, as well as a DVD-R which writes DVD-R/RW at 1x. The unit will also read DVDs at 8x, burn CDRs at 16x and CDRWs at 10x. Sony says this will be the first DVD-R/RW built into a notebook computer. Analysis: How soon will Apple put similar units into PowerBooks? Given that you can choose an iMac or Power Mac DVD-R model right now, it makes sense that Apple''s premiere portable should function as a DVD-R burner on the go. The software support for making movies is all there: DVD Studio Pro, Final Cut, iMovie, iDVD. There can be no doubt that Apple is looking at this very closely, but the company is clearly waiting to see if the economics of adding such a drive to PowerBook add up, as slimline, portable units always cost somewhat more than desktop drives. This would be a significant addition to the high-end PowerBook. Even if the DVD-R/RW was there for mere backup purposes (almost a must in this age of huge card drives and big files), it would make the PowerBook an even more appealing package. At the same price as the current PB 800 ($3,200), would you buy one?
