RISC chip inventor dies

How old were you when this revolutionary technology was a mere gleam in his eye?
After a long debilitating illness, as well as a number of strokes, John Cocke has died
at the age of 77, according to The Register.
Over his career -- the entirety of which was spent at IBM starting in 1957; ending in
1994 -- Cocke''s list of honors included over 20 RISC-related patents. He earned his
bachelor, graduate and doctoral (mathematics) degrees at Duke University.
Editor''s note: I wasn''t aware of Mr. Cocke until I saw this item on The Register, a
sin of ommission others likely share. Perhaps we should hold a vigil every year on the
date of his passing, overclocking our Macs to remember the meaning of the
word-coupling "think different." The overclocking bit is a ceremonial nose thumbing at
Apple... a nice touch I think.
