A domain with cachet at a price that most users can live with
As disaffected users hurl accusations and collect signatures, MacOSX.com has taken up
the cudgel and will provide cheap e-mail accounts. Granted, if you''re one of the
enraged, or merely peeved, this service won''t likely restore your faith in Apple, but
you will a 5MB account for $9.95 per year with a pretty spiffy domain -- macosx.com.
"Welcome. Our community of over 8000 Macintosh enthusiasts cried out asking for an
alternative to their @mac.com account. We answered. Our mail accounts provide you with
a macosx.com mail account for those seeking a lower cost alternative," states the
group''s website.
It''s unlikely that MacOSX.com will make any money by providing the accounts, so you
needn''t be concerned that you''ll be just another tool of the Mac-industry
money-making machine.
This service is provided under contract by DigitalCrowd using SquirrelMail, which will
ship with Mac OS X Server X.2 later this year. Also, DigitalCrowd is the same group
that has been providing macsrule.com email accounts since 1996. All told that''s a
pretty good pedigree.
MacOSX.com e-mail accounts include Virus scanning (incoming email) and SpamAssassin
(optional) filtering at no additional charge. Redirects/Forwarders/Alias accounts are
also available.
Here''s a breakdown of their rates:
� $9.95/year - 5mb mail account (pop account users)
� $12.95/year - 10mb mail account (pop account users)
� $14.95/year - 15mb mail account (recommended for both pop/imap)
� $19.95/year - 25mb mail account (great for IMAP users)
� $24.95/year - 50mb mail account (great for IMAP users)
And, here''s another promise -- "For those who are happy with the offering of their
ISP may opt for a "follow-me" service ($9.95). This provides you with a macosx.com
mail account. Should your ISP ever change names or you move and choose a different
service, your mail address never changes. Simply redirect all your macosx.com mail to
your new provider, or migrate it to our own full account at no additional charge."
Analysis: Notice the word "never" in MacOSX.com''s promise. Is it worth the electrons
used to display it? Only time will tell. Nevertheless, this service does offer name
domain with cachet and it''s reasonably priced. Moreover, it''s not hotmail.com. It''s
not ad-choked yahoo.com. And, you can turn off the spam filter if you want.
