Dot Mac: Barely One in Ten Will Play Ball - But How Many Will Stick Around?

Dot Mac Year Zero - then what?
A survey conducted by the web''s oldest Mac site of its readership has seen only 13%
say they will subscribe to .mac.
TidBits'' survey of around 1,700 readers suggests that 71% of respondents will not
sign up for .mac, while only 1% of non-iTools users say "maybe". 13% of those surveyed
said they did not use iTools and did not plan to use .mac.
Apple currently has 2.2 million iTools users. If even 10% of users did sign up, this
would mean around 220,000 users.
Analysis The question remains of how many of those who say they won''t subscribe are
doing so out of pique. Clearly, those who favor iTools are probably less likely to
respond to a survey, while plenty have vented their spleens around the web.
But the big issue is after Year One: how many subscribers will pitch Apple $100 after
$49 for the first year? How much return business will they get? If not enough
subscribe, do they raise the price of entry? Or do Apple kill .mac? After all, not
enough people bought the Cube. They killed that.
