Epson announces direct digital camera printing

Using a USB cable, the company promises a "computer-free" solution for printing
digitally-captured images
Epson has developed USB Direct-Print technology, which allows a digital camera to
print photographs directly to a printer through a USB connection without using a
computer.
At present, the company is selling printers with card slots can accept and read memory
cards used in many cameras that allow printing without a computer. The USB
Direct-Print feature is the first technology to provide printing capabilities using a
direct connection between a digital camera and a printer. The firm soon will release
printers that will support this new technology, and encourage digital camera makers to
leverage the technology for their products, according to a Nikkei Asia Biz Tech
article.
The USB Direct-Print technology will enable a printer to read image data directly from
a camera that controls images to be printed, the number of copies to be printed, image
sizes and so forth. This technology is made possible by adding Seiko Epson''s
proprietary commands to digital cameras and printers.
Moreover, the company plans to enhance the proprietary specification to cover not only
printers, but also CD-R drives, MO drives, LCD projectors and others in order to
directly exchange digital image data between these devices and digital cameras.
