New, updated browsers galore

The Netscape and Mozilla product families have both seen updates in the last week
It wasn''t long ago that Mozilla was little more than a pipe dream and Netscape a
franchise whithering on the vine. However, times have changed and updated
Gecko-powered browsers appear with refreshing regularity.
Netscape, aka AOL/Time Warner, has released public release candidate one (PR1) of its
Communicator 7 browser cum communications suite. This latest iteration features
quicker launch speed, tabbed browsing, improved website icons and grouped bookmarks,
as well improvements to the integrated e-mail, chat and Internet radio clients.
Of particular interest to this potential user is Netscape 7 PR1''s "Full Screen Mode"
feature, which lets the user see more of a web page and maximize screen space at the
same time. Personally, I''m hoping one can choose to force browser windows to fill the
entire screen as a default preference. Honestly, if I had a nickle for every time I
clicked and/or dragged a browser window to make it fill the screen, it''s highly
unlikely you''d have ever read the name "Ron Carlson" in print -- a bittersweet notion
for some of you I''m sure.
The GPL-infused code monkeys at Mozilla has loosed a third final candidate build of
v1.1 of their namesake browser. The advantage of using the open-source version of what
is essentially the Netscape browser is that you can turn pop-up windows without
disabling Javascript -- a neat feature to be sure.
A classic rejuvenated
A number of observers have noted the release of Netscape Communicator 4.8. Neither the
improvements included in this dot-update nor the reasoning behind revving this
"pre-Gecko" version of the Netscape broswer are available -- download it here
