X-Bytes and Pieces: A Plethora of Freeware and Shareware
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
August 27th 2002

Load up OS X with a bunch of useful and time-saving utilities.

Developer Pierre-Olivier Latour has put together a number of brilliant OS X-compatible
apps and utilities - and the good news is that many of them are freeware.

Perhaps his best-known freeware is X-Tunes, his iTunes controller, but wait, there''s
more.

X-Movie is a Cocoa-based replacement for the Quicktime movie player. It''s faster,
more responsive and free.

For PowerBook and iBook users who miss Jeremy Kezer''s MyBattery (not X yet, I don''t
think), Pierre-Olivier has X-Charge for you, a gauge type battery monitor which also
sports a cool Dock icon. It can also display a 24-hour graph of battery charges.

Screensaver afficionados haven''t been left out either, with a module displaying a
high-speed vortex tunnel. Psychadelic, says Pierre-Olivier, although not Flower Power
or Blue Dalmation - we''d rather not be reminded of them.

On the shareware front, there''s X-Change, a currency converter ($8); X-Locks ($15)
for all your passwords in a secure 448-bit encrypted database, and compatible with
Keychain; X-Namer ($10), for renaming batches of files, even ones in different
folders; and X-Sat ($10) for direct internet downloading of satellite images (Earth,
Europe, USA etc.). It''s customizable, so you can always get the image you want
displayed.

They all work with OS 10.1 and later.

Go get ''em.

Apple: hire this guy already.
