Power Mac G4 Server Not Killed By XServe
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
August 27th 2002

Base PM G4 Server line-ball with XServe, but towers stll live on.

Apple has announced revised versions of its desktop Power Mac G4 Servers, in the wake
of the recent release of its Dual-Processor Power Macs.

The story, sourced from eWeek [see link below] is incorrect: According to the
AppleStore, configurations are:

- 1.0GHz DP 256/120GB ($2,999)
- 1.25GHz DP 512/120GB (3,499)
- 1.25GHz DP 2.0GB/120GB ($4,699)

All are equipped with a Combo DVD/CDRW drive. A DVD-R/CDRW SuperDrive is available as
a $200 BTO option. Two SuperDrives as opticals cannot be ordered.

eWeek also confuses the 1GHz (1MB L3) with the middle-range 1.25GHz. Both 1.25GHz DP
models have 2MB L3 caches.

All the G4 Servers are based on the new Power Mac architecture, which includes DDR2700
memory and 167MHz system buses.

The Power Mac G4 Servers ""will be made available" to standard retail channels" soon,
according to a story on eWeek.

Some commentators argued recently that Apple would EOL the G4 Servers, given the
release of XServe, which provides most, if not more, of the features of the G4 Server
at a low price. XServe starts at only $2,999, and very little is said of the desktop
Servers at Apple''s OS X Server web site.

Owners of all XServes and Power Mac Servers purchased after July 17, 2002, may qualify
for the $19.99 OS X.2 Jaguar Server upgrade.

Analysis: Apple has kept this low-key, with no release at Apple''s PR web site, in
order to keep the spotlight on XServe, which is where its enterprise marketing dollars
are going. However, for users who prefer a desktop instead of a rack-mount config,
it''s a slightly more expensive option. Not that anyone''s stopping you putting a
rack-mount XServe on a desk or a shelf, mind you.
