800Mbps FireWire on Prototypes, Expected Feb-April 2003
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
September 2nd 2002
Dual-channel 1394b bus will make Apple first out of the box to produce gigawire.
Apple has 1394b, the 800Mbps FireWire specification, running on Mac prototypes, says
Mac OS Rumors.
The 1394b specification has now been fixed for some time, and sources in Taiwan
confirmed some months ago that manufacturers were looking to commence manufacture of
1394b devices this month. No units have appeared, or have been advertised, at this
stage.
MOSR says that Apple will ship dual-channel 1394b Macs, presumably on Power Macs
first, and then moving the new specification to all models. The dual-channel FireWire
would give a theoretical maximium of 1,600Mbps if used with drives on both buses with
a software RAID solution.
Also on the rumor front, MOSR report that original CRT iMacs may get dual-processor G4
upgrade cards from third-party manufacturers.
Analysis: Don''t be surprised if some consumer Mac models get 1394b before Pro models
do, depending on component availability and the refresh schedule for the various Mac
models. It''s happened before - the icy iBook got faster FireWire than the PowerBook
G4 and toasted it in the FireWire stakes for several months until the revved TiBook
appeared. On the 1394b peripheral front, we suspect device makers will probably wait
for 1394b Macs to appear before committing to volume production.
