Formac intros color-accurate 20.1" LCD
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
September 4th 2002
The gallery 2010 features latest breakthrough in LCD technology as well as ADC or DVI
connectors
Formac Electronic has announced the gallery 2010, a new generation 20.1-inch flat
panel display with Fujitsu''s Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment (MVA) Premium
technology. The gallery 2010 joins Formac''s award-winning line of flat panel
displays, a line of high-quality LCDs that conform to PANTONE display standards for
color-accurate display.
Formac''s latest display development is designed for professionals working in
color-critical applications, such as desktop-publishing, pre-press, video editing and
digital imaging. The gallery 2010 is equipped with ADC or DVI interfaces, and is
Macintosh or PC compatible.
"Flat panel displays have gained tremendous popularity with consumers and in standard
office environments.", said Oliver Bergmann, PhD, CEO and president. "Professionals in
creative industries however are still hesitating to migrate from CRTs to LCDs, because
of the inherent color accuracy and ghosting problems of flat panel displays. Formac''s
new Gallery 2010 display combines the latest TFT technology with Formac''s digital
graphics technology to close this gap. Its performance matches and, in most cases,
clearly outperforms professional CRTs."
The large active matrix TFT has an effective diagonal width of 20.1-inch that features
a high-definition UXGA resolution of 1,600 by 1,200 pixels, and offers roughly the
same viewable area as a 23-inch CRT. Engineered for the professional market, this
display conforms to the highest PANTONE standards, the industry''s accepted benchmark
for color management.
To achieve accurate on-screen colors, the new display employs Formac''s 24-bit digital
graphics technology. This proprietary technology is custom designed to enhance and
realize the benefits of Fujitsu''s latest TFT technology, MVA Premium.
This second generation of the MVA technology uses a new concept to align Liquid
Crystal molecules and separates LC cells into several domains to provide a wide range
of unique benefits. The gallery 2010 guarantees a color purity of EBU 85 percent
(European Broadcast Union), and features an extremely wide viewing angle of up to 170
degrees without gray scale inversion or color distortion, allowing it to be calibrated
accurately for professional color matching.
This new display sets an industry standard for brightness (250cd/m2) and contrast
ratio (500:1), producing brilliant and sharp pictures from edge to edge. The ultrafast
pixel response time of 25ms, eliminates the ghosting effect often found on flat panel
displays and makes the gallery 2010 ideal for reproducing fast moving images.
The gallery 2010 will ship at the end of September 2002 through Formac Certified
Resellers and Shop Formac. The display carries an SRP of $1,699 and comes with a
three-year limited warranty.
Analysis: With margins on 15 and 17-inch LCD shrinking, new product development has of
late centered on larger-screen models. It''s interesting that Formac is espousing
PANTONE as the benchmark color standard.
